Advanced Micro Devices Inc.(AMD) hopes to seize a larger share of the power server chip market from its rival Intel Corp. on Monday when it launches the Barcelona quad-core processor.
AMD has been shipping the Quad-Core AMD Opteron chip to server vendors throughout August, but will use its news conference in San Francisco to publicly announce those partnerships as well as prices and benchmark test results.

Cassatt Corporation this week introduced a novel concept in the management of green data centers--if your servers aren't being used, turn them off. While that's easy enough to say, when you imagine the typical interdependencies of your average online server farm--Server A relies on a DB from Server B, a Web service from Server C, and so on--you'll quickly realize that just flipping the switch on a specific server at a particular time isn't the easy answer you might wish it to be; not to mention the potential catastrophe that could occur if you pulled the plug on a server without gracefully downing each of its individual applications.

Chicago, IL, August 30, 2007 -- Recent tests by Neal Nelson & Associates, an independent computer performance consulting firm, have reported that in 36 of the 57 cases tested an AMD (NYSE: AMD) Opteron based server delivered better power efficiency than a comparably configured Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) Xeon based server.

Hewlett-Packard on Thursday upgraded its lineup of multi-processor based servers with Intel's latest 7300 series quad-core Xeon processors.
The upgrades include the rack-based ProLiant DL580 G5 and the ProLiant BL680c G5, which is HP's first four-processor blade server, the company said.

Lately, when I look at the specifications of new mainboards and their configuration, seeing SATA RAID or ATA RAID on the board comes as no surprise. Many of the manufacturers are now offering their own flavour of the RAID implementation, e.g. Gigabyte's GigaRAID or VIA's V-RAID.
